BREAKTHROUGH STUDY SHOWS COLD HYDRATION INCREASES PERFORMANCE IN FITNESS TRAINING
Clinical research proves Thermos® vacuum insulation technology improves athletic performance

TORONTO, ON (July 6, 2011) – Striving to improve your overall athletic performance? You might not need to look any further than your water bottle. Thermos®, the leaders in the insulated beverageware category and exclusive licensee of Under Armour® hydration bottles, recently sponsored a clinical pilot study to prove that it’s not only how much or what you drink while working out, but also the temperature of the fluids that drives performance. The breakthrough study found that cold water (4° C) has been shown to keep core temperature down and increase athletic performance*. Preliminary research indicates that by keeping core temperature down and relieving heat-related stress on the body that leads to fatigue, protein denaturation and other performance reducing effects, “cold hydration” (ongoing consumption of water at 4° C throughout the course of the workout) has the potential to increase strength and power output, improving training results.

“During our cold hydration trial, we saw that 70% of study participants had an improvement in their broad jump performance versus their results when drinking room temperature water (22-23° C) during a training session,” said Stacy Sims, Ph.D., Exercise Physiologist and Sport Nutritionist at Stanford University, who consulted on the pilot study. “Additionally, the longer you work out, the more important cold hydration is to your training. After 30 minutes, participants showed a clinically relevant difference in core temperature when drinking cold water, versus training with room temperature hydration.”

In the hydration bottle category, only Thermos Brand insulated products featuring unique Thermos® vacuum insulation technology keep beverages cold for 12-24 hours. “Thermos offers innovative insulated hydration bottles to make getting your essential daily intake of cold water or other healthy beverages easier, whether you’re at the gym or on the run,” said Rick Dias, President and Chief Operating Officer at Thermos. “Given the new findings correlating cold hydration and improved athletic performance, our vacuum insulated bottles are a simple way for athletes at all levels to step-up their training.”

Each of the Thermos stainless steel vacuum insulated hydration bottle designs includes unique and convenient features to make it easy to stay active and hydrated with cold water. From 530 mL leak-proof straw bottles to 710 mL flip lid bottles, all athletes can find the perfect bottle for their workout routine.

BPA Free Why it matters

Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a controversial chemical that can be found in the lining of food cans, certain water bottles and more. Some researchers have linked the hormone-mimicking chemical to a host of issues including behavioral and developmental effects in kids. Thermos plays it safe, and has made a commitment to only manufacture products that are BPA-free.
